A simple way to start tracking daily expenses
Start with the purchases you already remember. Build a useful record without turning it into another chore.
You do not need a perfect spreadsheet to start understanding your spending. A short, consistent record is more useful than a complicated system you stop using after three days.
Start with today
Choose one place to record your expenses. When you buy something, write down the amount, the date, and a category. Add a short note only when it will help you recognise the purchase later. You can begin with today's coffee or groceries rather than trying to reconstruct months of old receipts.
PocketLuma keeps this workflow deliberately small: tap Add, enter the amount, choose a category, and save. Each expense keeps its chosen currency; reports show one currency at a time. It does not connect to your bank; you enter each expense yourself.
Choose a moment you can repeat
Some people prefer entering a purchase immediately. Others collect receipts and spend a few minutes recording them in the evening. Choose the rhythm that fits your day. The best approach is the one you can maintain, including on busy days.
When entering an older purchase, change its date to the day you actually spent the money. This helps your daily and monthly views describe what happened rather than when you remembered to record it.
Keep notes useful
A category such as Food tells you the general purpose. A note such as lunch with a colleague helps you distinguish similar purchases. You do not need to include account numbers, card details, or other sensitive information in an expense note.
Make a small review part of the routine
At the end of the week, look for missing purchases and accidental duplicates. Then notice which categories account for the largest share of the expenses you recorded. Treat these totals as a view of your recorded activity, not a complete bank balance.
A missing day does not mean you need to abandon the habit. Add what you can reasonably reconstruct and continue. Your record becomes more useful as it grows.
